Riding motorcycles is a fun pastime. It does come with safety risks, though, so it's essential to choose the right helmet. Read on for motorcycle helmet buying tips.

Look at the Safety Ratings

When selecting a motorcycle helmet, it is important to look for the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) symbol on the back of the helmet. This symbol shows the helmet meets federal safety standards.

Select the Right Fit

Motorcycle helmets come in a variety of sizes and shapes to accommodate different riders' heads. The most common shape is intermediate oval. You can also get a helmet that has a round oval or long oval shape.

To figure out what size helmet you need, measure your head with a measuring tape. The tape should fall just above your eyebrows and at the fullest section at the back of the head.

Then look up your measurements on a helmet size chart to figure out your helmet size. If your helmet is a little snug, it's probably the right size. Just make sure the helmet does not move when you shake your head. If it does, it may be too big.

Pick a Style That Suits You

When choosing a helmet, there are several styles to choose from. A full-face helmet will give you the most protection. So, having a full-face helmet may be the best option.

Another style is the half helmet. These helmets do not protect your chin, although they do offer more ventilation.

Open-face helmets are great for protecting the top and sides of your head, including your ears. However, they still leave your chin exposed. If you are looking for a compromise between full-face and half helmets, you might like this style.

Modular helmets allow you to open the helmet by the chin bar. You can talk and enjoy refreshments without having to take off your helmet. Their look is similar to that of full-face helmets. However, their safety rating is lower. If you are a professional racer, you may want to stick to full-face helmets.

Dual-sport helmets are quite flexible as you can use them both on-road and off-road. Although they come with a face shield, there's enough room for you to use goggles when going off-road.

Deciding on a helmet requires some thought. You want to choose one that is safe to use, fits properly, and is appropriate for the type of riding you want to do.
